Embalming
Preserves the Body
This is useful in today’s society where family members may live great distances apart. It can allow extended time for the loved one’s to have a chance to view the body and say goodbyes prior to burial or cremation.
Adds Color
The embalming fluid contains tints that add color to the deceased. It is one reason why many funeral homes will require a body be embalmed if there is an open casket viewing. Adding the color can make it easier on the family and friends viewing the deceased.
Escape into the Environment
The embalming fluid will preserve the body for only a period of time. As the body breaks down, the chemicals are released.
Embalming is a choice and rarely mandatory, however it is typically necessary for viewing and may also be necessary if the body is going to be transported by air or rail.
According to the Federal Trade Commission Funeral Rule, all funeral homes are required to get permission to embalm.
