Creating a Memorial Funeral Ceremony

Bring personal items into the funeral home to be displayed in or near the casket.

Examples:

  • An avid golfer might have a favorite putter placed in the casket.
  • An avid hunter or angler might have some of their personal effects or trophies displayed on a memory table.
  • A person who quilted could have the casket draped with a quilt they made.
  • An artist could have their artwork displayed.
  • A person’s favorite rocking chair could be brought to the funeral home and placed next to the casket.
  • Families should consider personalized and meaningful options for creating memorable services. A fire fighter, for example, might be transported on a fire truck.

The Service Might Include:

A Life Tribute

This is the main part of the ceremony and will be written to capture the essence, personality and beliefs of the person who has died and can include stories and anecdotes as well as funny and sad memories.

Words From Family and Friends

These may be delivered by either the person themselves or by the person delivering the ceremony. Letters and or emails can also be shared.

Poems and Readings

Favorite poems or readings will add value to the service. There are many available online to help you personalize your service. Religious readings, favorite prayers, or passages from the bible are often comforting.

Music

Music is such an important part of most lives. Be sure to include music that relates to the person you honor. From hymns to rock music – music will help loved ones to hold positive memories for years to come.

Other Things You Might Like to Include:

  • A few minutes silent reflection for people to remember.
  • Time for people attending to share their thoughts and say a few words.
  • Lighting a candle, signing a book of memories.
  • Care notes or notes where attendees can write memories or notes to the next of kin for them to read as they begin the healing process.
