Shipping the Body
If final disposition will take place in a location other than where death occurred:
- Funeral arrangements are normally provided by the funeral provider that will receive the body and be responsible for burial or final disposition.
- Many families choose to have a service at both locations. If the deceased had local friends or family, consider a simple service celebrate their life before the body is shipped. This will allow closure for loved ones who will be unable to attend the funeral. In this case, the funeral provider where death occurs will initially take charge.
- Be prepared to pay for the funeral services. In most cases, all funeral costs must be paid up front before the body can be shipped out.
Additional services provided when there is a ship out:
- Prepare the deceased for transportation to the departure airport
- Provide a lightweight, inexpensive carrier for the remains
- Arrange for any required documents and permits
- Obtain airline space for the remains
- Notify your local funeral service of the flight information
- Transport the deceased to the airport for departure
The cost of transportation in both cases varies according to location. This is especially true of out-of-state transportation as the departure and arrival airports may dictate airfare for the remains.
